November 17th 2016 will mark the two-year anniversary of the Black Women’s Mobilization for the Care of Life and the Ancestral Territories’ march from their rural ancestral communities in Northern Cauca. The Black Women’s Mobilization was made up of black women who decided to leave their sons and daughters, their homes, and the work they perform in their communities on a daily basis to march to the Colombian Capital of Bogotá where they proceeded to occupy the Ministry of Interior to demand that the national government adopt the necessary mechanisms to guarantee the protection the life of and within the territories and the afro-descendant peoples of Northern Cauca threatened by illegal and unconstitutional mining as well as the violence of economic policies and armed groups.
As a result, the Colombian Government was obliged to seat at the negotiation table with the black women to negotiate a number of accords that to this date remain unfulfilled because the government does not honor its word. Their mobilization was made with the intention of putting an end to the illegal and unconstitutional mining activities that continue to steal the intergenerational source of accessible gold deposits, poisoning rivers, and threaten their lives and generate the long-term displacement of their families from their rural ancestral lands to the precariousness of urban cities.
Nearly two years since that historic march, the Black Women’s Mobilization for the Care of Life and the Ancestral Territories continue to organize ongoing movement actions in the region of Northern Cauca, nationally, and internationally, with the goal of holding the Colombian Government accountable to the agreements reached in 2014, and to strengthen the social, political, economic, and cultural vitality of Black Women.
Recognizing that both their strengths, and challenges, are linked to their sister’s across Africa and the African Diaspora, the Black Women’s Mobilization for the Care of Life and Ancestral Territories are hosting a National and International Gathering of Black Women Caregivers of Life and Ancestral Territories on the 2-year anniversary of their historic march.
